  • The Oppo R17 Pro looks a lot like the Oppo R17, launched earlier this month.
  • However, the Oppo R17 Pro has two batteries and three rear camera lenses, among other interesting features.
  • Price and availability of the R17 Pro haven’t been announced yet.

Oppo revealed the price and shipping date of the Oppo R17 today, but it also officially launched the beefed-up brother to the device, the Oppo R17 Pro.

The R17 Pro has a 6.4-inch AMOLED screen with a resolution of 2,340 x 1,080 and a screen-to-body ratio of 91.5 percent. It runs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 chipset at a clock speed of 2.2GHz, 8GB of RAM, and an Adreno 616 GPU. There’s 128GB of storage space (no memory card support) and a dual-SIM slot.

If you just look at the phone, the Oppo R17 Pro lacks the ingenuity of the company’s Find X device with its fancy pop-up camera, opting instead for a very small notched display. However, there are still some really interesting things going on in this smartphone that you’re not going to find anywhere else.

But before we get into all of that, you’ll notice that the overall design aesthetic of the R17 Pro is very similar to the R17, with the so-called waterdrop notch and color scheme that harkens back to the Huawei P20 Pro.

However, when you flip the phone over you’ll see another thing that reminds you of the P20 Pro: three camera lenses:

Even though the three lenses appear to be just like the P20 setup, that’s not exactly true. The P20 Pro features a 40MP main sensor, a 20MP monochrome sensor, and an 8MP telephoto lens. The R17 Pro, in contrast, has a 20MP main lens, a 12MP secondary lens, and a “3D stereo camera” lens.

The third lens is supposedly more for AR features than camera snapshots, but until we get some time with the R17 Pro it will be hard to tell what it can really do.

If you’re wondering where the fingerprint sensor is, it’s an in-display sensor just like on the R17. You just put your finger on the AMOLED panel in the required spot and it will unlock for you.

But one of the really interesting things about the Oppo R17 Pro is its battery – or rather, “batteries.” The R17 Pro actually has two batteries: both with a capacity of 1,850mAh for a combined equivalent of 3,700mAh. Working together in tandem, Oppo claims that the maximum charging power is close to 50W and you’ll get a 40 percent charge in only ten minutes.

It is not clear if one battery drains first and then the other after or if both batteries drain/charge simultaneously. Once again, we’ll need more hands-on time with the phone to answer some of these questions.

Speaking of hands-on time, Oppo is mum so far on how much the R17 Pro will cost as well as when it will be available. We’ll keep our eyes out for you.
