HTC hints at August 30 unveiling of U device, probably HTC U12 Life

  • HTC tweeted a teaser image today suggesting a new “U” device will land on August 30.
  • It could possibly be the previously-leaked HTC U12 Life.
  • The HTC U12 Life — if that’s its real name — would be a mid-range version of the HTC U12 Plus.

Back in July we caught an exclusive leak of promotional materials describing a new mid-range device from HTC, codenamed “Imagine Life.” We assumed that the device is the HTC U12 Life, the follow-up to last year’s HTC U11 Life and a cheaper alternative to its flagship HTC U12 Plus.

Today, HTC tweeted a teaser ad from its official account which describes a new “U” device landing on August 30. We don’t know anything for certain, but it very well possibly could be the HTC U12 Life.

Check out the tweet below:

If the HTC U12 Life is what’s coming on August 30, that would be really early; the HTC U11 Life landed in December last year. However, that doesn’t mean that the U12 Life isn’t what’s coming next week.

Editor's Pick

Our leaked promotional materials for the “Imagine Life” handset suggest a mid-ranger with some decent upgrades over the HTC U11 Life. “Imagine Life” will come with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 chipset, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage. It will have a 6-inch display with a resolution of 2,160 x 1,080, a dual camera on the rear, and a 3,600mAh battery. It will likely ship with Android 8.1 Oreo.

The specs would suggest a smartphone in the sub-$300 price range, but this is HTC we’re talking about so it would most likely be between $300 and $400. We’ll have to wait until August 30 to know for sure what’s coming.

There was also the weird rumor that HTC might not even be making the HTC U12 Life itself, instead outsourcing the production to another company or companies. If that’s true, it would be the first time HTC outsourced the production of a phone in one of its flagship series. This would certainly represent a major turning point for a company in danger of becoming totally irrelevant.
