Best high-end smartphone: Moto Z3

The Motorola Moto Z was introduced in 2016 and was an exciting shift away from the norm. With subsequent iterations, the portfolio of attachable Moto Mods has continued to grow, with backward compatibility one of the biggest selling points of these add-ons.

Moto Mods continues to be a big part of the latest in the Z-series – the Moto Z3 – and the latest Motorola flagship brings something new with a future promise of access 5G speeds. While this makes the Moto Z3 future-proof, it’s specifications go the other way instead. With a Snapdragon 835 onboard and a Full HD+ display, the Moto Z3 falls behind a lot of the flagship competition in 2018.

Luckily, Motorola has priced the Verizon-exclusive Moto Z3 appropriately at $480. It is a solid smartphone with a beautiful design and comes with excellent and useful add-ons that really help you get the most out of the device. However, the most exciting part about this phone will come in 2019 by which time its hardware will be even more outdated.

Honorable mention: Moto Z3 Play

There has always been a clear distinction between the flagship Z series and the mid-range Play editions, but the lines have been blurred with the Moto Z3 Play. The design and most of the specifications of the Moto Z3 Play are the same as the Moto Z3 and you get the same Moto Mods compatibility as well.

The only difference is that the Z3 Play comes with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 processor, giving the Z3 a slight leg up. At $449.99, the Moto Z3 Play is only slightly cheaper than the Z3. It is available unlocked though, while the Z3 is a Verizon-exclusive.

Best mid-range smartphone: Moto G6

Motorola found its success in the smartphone game on the back of its ever-popular G series. The impressive series has continued to go from strength to strength with every generation and the latest offering, the Moto G6, is one of the best affordable smartphones you can buy.

You get a beautiful design that is far more premium than its price point would suggest. One of the most impressive features of the Moto G6 is its battery life, and the software experience remains one of the best around. Its specifications are what you would expect from a sub-$300 smartphone, but the performance is still pretty good. The G series has always featured the perfect balance between quality and compromise and that remains true with the Moto G6.

There are two variants of the Moto G6 available. The one with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage is currently priced at $234.99 while the 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage iteration is priced at $299.99.

Specs

  • 5.7-inch IPS LCD display with 2160 x 1080 resolution

Honorable mention: Moto X4

best motorola phones - moto x4

For the longest time, the X series was Motorola’s flagship line. While it may have now been relegated to the mid-range, the Moto X4 remains one of the best Motorola smartphones around, despite being almost a year old now. You get a 5.2-inch Full HD display, the Snapdragon 630 onboard, backed by 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. There are versions with double the storage and 4GB or 6GB of RAM in other markets.

The X4 comes with an impressive camera setup that includes 12MP + 8MP dual rear cameras and a 16MP front-facing shooter. It is also the only Motorola phone to feature an IP rating (IP68) for dust and water resistance and comes with Amazon Alexa on-board. The Moto X4 is currently priced at just $279.

Best budget smartphone: Moto G6 Play

If you are looking for an even more affordable option, the Moto G6 Play is a great way to go. Despite the similar name, the Moto G6 Play falls more in line with the likes of the Moto E5 Plus than the Moto G6.

The display resolution drops to HD+, the processor is a slower Snapdragon 427, and there is 3GB of RAM onboard. Where the Moto G6 Play has the advantage is in battery life, with the huge 4,000mAh battery and lower resolution display allowing for excellent total usage. You only get a single rear camera, but it isn’t bad when compared to other affordable devices.

The Moto G6 Play is available with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage and is priced at just $189. If you are looking for a solid smartphone on a budget, the Moto G6 Play is definitely worth consideration.

Specs

  • 5.7-inch IPS LCD display with 1440 x 720 resolution
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 427 chipset
  • 3GB RAM
  • 32GB of onboard storage, expandable up to 128GB
  • 13MP rear camera, 8MP front camera
  • 4,000mAh battery
  • Android 8.1 Oreo
  • 155.4 x 72.2 x 9.1mm, 180grams

Honorable mention: Moto E5 Plus

best motorola phones - moto e5 plus

The Moto E series is another popular budget-friendly line from Motorola that is known for their huge batteries. And that certainly remains the case with the latest in the series – the Moto E5 Plus. Specifications include a 6-inch HD display, the Snapdragon 435 processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, and 12MP and 8MP rear and front-facing cameras. The big, literally, selling point here is the 5,000mAh battery that keeps the device running for at least a couple of days, if not more.

The pricing strategy behind the Moto E5 Plus is really odd though. The device isn’t available unlocked but can be picked up directly from various network carriers. However, the price fluctuates pretty significantly between the lot. The device is priced at just $149.99 with Boost Mobile and $159.99 from Cricket. T-Mobile has the phone available for $225 and Sprint takes the cake with a price point of $288 for what should be an ultra-affordable device.
