  • GOP Rep. Kat Cammack suggested Democrats were drinking as Republicans struggled to elect a speaker.
  • Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez rejected that idea.
  • "If Dems took a shot every time McCarthy lost a Republican, we'd all be unconscious by now," she tweeted.

Sure, Democrats have joked about eating popcorn as Republicans struggle to elect a House speaker. But they're drawing the line on allegations of drinking alcohol.

"If only!" Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York tweeted. "If Dems took a shot every time McCarthy lost a Republican, we'd all be unconscious by now."

Ocasio-Cortez was responding to a tweet from Punchbowl News' Jake Sherman about a comment from GOP Rep. Kat Cammack, of Florida, who nominated Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy for House speaker. As of Wednesday evening, McCarthy has lost six House votes for speaker.

"They want us to fight each other," Cammack said. "That much has been made clear by the popcorn, and blankets, and alcohol that is coming over there."

Cammack smiled and laughed as Democrats started shouting and called for her words to be stricken from the record. But rules don't exist yet this Congress. Neither do actual members of the House of Representatives, until a House speaker can be elected and the members then sworn into office. "The House is not in order," Cammack said laughing.

Ocasio-Cortez's comment isn't exactly hyperbole. McCarthy needs 218 votes to become speaker but he keeps coming up short, with about 20 Republicans voting for another member. And Democrats are being told to stay in DC until someone is elected speaker.

If this goes on much longer, for what it's worth, the book "Drinking with the Democrats" has cocktail recipes, drinking anecdotes from Democratic White House administrations and some good reviews on Amazon. It's apparently frequently purchased with "Drinking with the Republicans."
