HBO's long-anticipated season 1 finale of "House of the Dragon" has reportedly illegally leaked online, and HBO is scrambling to try to scrub it from the internet.
The episode was leaked on Friday, two days before its air date.
HBO did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment, but a company spokesperson told Variety that the leak came from one of the company's own distribution partners in Europe, the Middle East, or Africa.
"HBO is aggressively monitoring and pulling these copies from the internet. We're disappointed that this unlawful action has disrupted the viewing experience for loyal fans of the show, who will get to see a pristine version of the episode when it premieres Sunday on HBO and HBO Max, where it will stream exclusively in 4K," the HBO spokesperson told Variety.
While this is the first reported leak for the "Game of Thrones" spinoff, HBO has a long history of dealing with piracy.
In August 2017, hackers leaked episodes of HBO's "Insecure," "Curb Your Enthusiasm," and a reported draft script of a yet-to-air episode of "Game of Thrones."
The hacks led HBO to make the decision to film multiple "Game of Thrones" endings in an effort to throw off would-be leakers from spoiling the series finale.
"You have to do that on a long show. Because when you're shooting something, people know. So they're going to shoot multiple versions so that there's no real definitive answer until the end," HBO exec Casey Bloys said at the time.
