The US is reopening its land borders for nonessential travel with Canada and Mexico to fully vaccinated people in November.

Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas announced on Tuesday that the change would take place next month: "In alignment with the new international air travel system that will be implemented in November, we will begin allowing travelers from Mexico and Canada who are fully vaccinated for COVID-19 to enter the United States for non-essential purposes, including to visit friends and family or for tourism, via land and ferry border crossings."

Senior administration officials also told the Associated Press that the change will take place in November, and the rules are due to be announced on Wednesday.

It is not clear exactly when in November the change will take place.

The routes have been closed for nonessential travel for 19 months due to the pandemic.

Canada lifted its ban on fully vaccinated nonessential travelers from the US in August, sparking huge traffic jams and waits at the border.
