We previously reported that Motorola will release a second foldable phone some time around September this year. Now, folks over at XDA Developers have managed to source information about its specs.

Motorola has already confirmed that the upcoming foldable is the second iteration of the 2019 Motorola Razr, so a spec upgrade is naturally expected. According to XDA’s sources, it’s a big one.

The revamped clamshell will reportedly get with the times and feature a Snapdragon 765 5G chipset. The new Moto Razr is also expected to bring more RAM, storage, and battery capacity. As per XDA’s sources, it’ll come with 8GB RAM, 256GB storage, and a slightly larger 2,845mAh battery.

The camera setup is said to include a 48MP Samsung ISOCELL Bright GM1 sensor. While it’s an upgrade over the 16MP main camera on the current Motorola Razr, Samsung’s GM1 sensor is now a generation older. Phones like the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro already use Samsung’s updated 48MP ISOCELL Bright GM2 sensor which was released last year. Motorola has the opportunity to use it as well, but probably isn’t doing so to cut down on costs.

Elsewhere, the front camera on the new Motorola Razr is also rumored to go from a 5MP sensor to a 20MP shooter.

XDA further reports that the device will run Android 10 out-of-the box. It’ll also apparently get the same dimensions for both the main and external displays, so expect a 6.2-inch foldable screen and a 2.7-inch outer display.

Motorola Razr 2: Better specs but still not a flagship

While the upgraded specs certainly bode well for the new Motorola Razr, it still seems to be missing flagship appeal. The Galaxy Z Flip is already a much better proposition than the current Motorola Razr. If Samsung releases an updated Z Flip, it could very thwart Moto’s second attempt as well. Then there’s also Huawei which is reportedly working on a cheaper clamshell foldable. So Motorola clearly has its work cut out for it.

We hope the company makes amends and learns from the mistakes it made with the 2019 Razr. It was a disappointing phone overall with an inflated price, budget specs, and bad build quality. If Motorola addresses all those issues, it could have a decent chance at making a mark on the foldable phones market.
