- Acting Secretary of the Navy Thomas Modly rushed to relieve Capt. Brett Crozier of his command of the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt because he wanted to act before President Donald Trump intervened, The Washington Post reported on Sunday.
- Crozier was relieved on Thursday, just days after a letter pleading with the Navy for more support as his ship dealt with a coronavirus outbreak leaked to the media.
- Modly has accused the captain of sending out the letter in a way that made it susceptible to a leak.
- "If I were president, and I saw a commanding officer of a ship exercising such poor judgment, I would be asking why the leadership of the Navy wasn't taking action itself," the acting Navy secretary told The Post columnist David Ignatius, revealing that he wanted to take action before the president felt the need to do so.
- Modly reportedly said that his predecessor "lost his job because the Navy Department got crossways with the president," adding that he "didn't want that to happen again."
