City Of Chicago Files Civil Suit Against Jussie Smollett

As Jussie Smollett parties it up in Hawaii, the city of Chicago is busy filing a civil suit against the Empire actor. You’ll recall, Jussie was previously charged with 16 counts of disorderly conduct after Chicago PD accused him of staging his own attack back in January — BUT, Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Fox dropped the charges.

Still holding onto the idea that he staged his own attack, the city now claims in a complaint that Jussie misled cops by claiming his attackers were white and wants him to pay back $130,000 spent on police overtime.

From Page Six:

Smollett, 36, who is black and gay, allegedly hired brothers Abel and Ola Osundairo, who also are black, to stage an assault on him and make it look like a hate crime, according to authorities. The actor told cops that the primary attacker “was wearing a ski mask that covered his entire face, with the exception of the area around his eyes, by which (Smollett) could tell the attacker was white-skinned,” according to the lawsuit. “(Smollett) made this statement despite knowing that the Osundairo Brothers are not white-skinned,” the suit says. “By providing this false description, (Smollett) purposely misled the CPD officers to believe that his attackers were white, when, in fact, (Smollett) knew that his attackers were the Osundairo brothers.” In adds: “At no point did Defendant inform police that he knew his attackers or recognized their appearances or voices.”

According to the site, the Chicago Police Department determined it used “1,836 hours of overtime in the search for Smollett’s attackers, costing taxpayers $130,106.15.” Furthermore, the city is apparently entitled to recoup three times its total damages.

“The city also will seek unspecified attorneys’ fees and costs, as well as a $1,000 fine for each false statement to police,” Page Six reports.

Meanwhile, like we mentioned earlier, Jussie’s been busy having a grand ol’ time hanging out with family in Hawaii. See those photos here and stay tuned.
