Samsung is without a doubt the biggest name in the Android world, and if you are considering purchasing a new phone, logic dictates you may be looking to pick up a phone made by the Korean giant. However, while it might be easy to just say “get a Note or the latest Galaxy S,” Samsung’s line-up is actually quite robust with a variety of phones covering prices as low as $85 or as high as $1000 or more
Some of Samsung’s mid-range and entry lineups are so similar in specs and design that picking a phone can be a bit confusing. That’s where we come in. In this list, we break down some of the best Samsung phones for the high, mid, and even entry-level options.
Best high-end Samsung phones: Galaxy S10e, S10 and S10 Plus
Samsung went all out with its latest flagship smartphone launch. In February 2019, it introduced three new handsets for its Galaxy S10 lineup; the Galaxy S10e, the Galaxy S10, and the Galaxy S10 Plus. They are by far the best Samsung phones you can buy at the moment.
All three of these Samsung phones share much of the same hardware and features. here’s what they have in common:
- Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor inside for the US and China markets or the Enynox 9820 chipset in European and other markets.
- The increasingly rare 3.5mm headphone jack, and microSD card support too.
- Rapid wireless charing and reverse wireless charging.
- Android 9 Pie with Samsung’s new One UI skin.
- RAM sizes ranging between 6GB of RAM and 12GB RAM, storage between 128GB and 1TB.
- IP68 ratings for dust and water resistance.
The biggest differences for each of the Galaxy S10 phones center around screen size, cameras, and battery sizes. All of the phones use Samsung’s Infinity-O display with a Dynamic AMOLED screen and Gorilla Glass 6 for protection. They support punch-hole front-facing cameras so that they can have very high screen-to-body ratios. The Galaxy S10e has a 5.8-inch screen with Full HD+ resolution and a captive fingerprint sensor on the side of the phone. The Galaxy S10 has a 6.1-inch display with Quad HD+ resolution, while the Galaxy S10 Plus has a 6.4-inch Quad HD+ display. Both of those phones have an in-screen ultrasonic fingerprint sensor.
All three phones have one dual-pixel 10MP front camera, and the Galaxy S10 Plus throws in a second front-facing 8MP depth sensor. The Galaxy S10e has two rear cameras; an ultra-wide 16MP sensor with a 123-degree field of view and a wide-angle 12MP camera with a 77-degree field of view. Both the Galaxy S10 and S10 Plus have those same cameras, and in addition, they also have a third telephoto 12MP camera with a 45-degree field of view. Finally, the battery sizes range from 3,100mAh for the Galaxy S10e, 3,400mAh for the Galaxy S10 and 4,100mAh for the Galaxy S10 Plus. Again, these are the best Samsung phones that are available as of this writing.
Samsung is selling the three Galaxy S10 models unlocked on its site, with prices starting at $749.99 for the S10e, $899.99 for the standard S10 and $999.99 for the S10 Plus. Carriers like AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon, Spectrum Mobile, U.S. Cellular, and Xfinity Mobile are all selling the phones, both online and on their official websites, with various payment plans and bonuses. If you’re looking to buy an unlocked Samsung Galaxy S10, the main trio will also be sold via Amazon, Best Buy, Costco, Sam’s Club, Target, Walmart, and B&H Photo, as well as Samsung’s official store and the ShopSamsung app.
If you are looking for a flagship Samsung phone that’s a bit cheaper than the latest Galaxy S10 phones, then check out these two alternatives:
- The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 not only sports a large 6.4-inch display, it has the latest S Pen, which now supports Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), allowing you to do more things with the stylus.
- If you want to get a phone that’s nearly as powerful as the Galaxy S10, the earlier Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus phones are still great choices. Also, they are now priced hundreds of dollars less than the S10 models.
Best mid-range Samsung phone: Galaxy A50
The Samsung Galaxy A50 may be the best mid-range phone the company has released in some time. It starts with a big 6.4 inch Super AMOLED display, with a 2,340 x 1,080 resolution and a teardrop notch design. Inside there’s Samsung’s in-house Exynos 9610 chipset, along with either 4GB or 6GB of RAM and either 64GB or 128GB of onboard expandable storage. You also get a big 4,000mAh battery that should last up to one day on a single charge. It also comes with not only Android 9 Pie out of the box, but Samsung’s new OneUI skin as well.
The biggest plus on the Galaxy A50 is its impressive cameras. There are three cameras on the back; a 25MP primary sensor, an 8MP wide-angle lens, and a 5MP depth sensor. The front facing camera has a 25MP sensor. Our review showed that the phone can take some great shots if there is a lot of light, but low-light settings may be harder to take great images.
The international version of the Galaxy A10 is available on Amazon starting at $299.99 for 64GB of storage and 4GB of RAM. You can get the 128GB edition starting at $349.99. Be aware these phones don’t have a U.S. warranty and only work on GSM networks like T-Mobile and AT&T.
If you want to try some different mid-range Samsung phones, here are a couple of alternatives:
- Would you like a phone with four rear cameras? That’s what the Galaxy A9 (2018) offers as its main feature. You can get the international version of the phone starting at $388 on Amazon.
- The Samsung Galaxy A30 has the same 6.4-inch display as the A50 but with lower-end hardware specs inside. That means it’s also cheaper; you can get it at Amazon starting at $204.
Best cheap Samsung phone: Galaxy J7
If you’re on the hunt for a cheap Samsung phone, the Galaxy J7 just might be up your alley. The phone doesn’t impress in the specs department, but it still has enough power under the hood for the average user.
Its display measures 5.5 inches and offers HD resolution. The device has 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, which you can expand with the help of a microSD card. There’s a basic 13MP camera on board along with a 13MP selfie snapper. Other specs and features include a 3,300mAh battery, Android 8.0 Oreo, and a headphone jack.
The Galaxy J7 doesn’t shine in the design department. It’s not ugly, but it definitely can’t compare to more expensive models with their glass backs and thin bezels. You can get the unlocked version of the handset from Amazon for $147, making it one of the best Samsung phones in the budget category.
