In this post, which will be updated regularly, we’re taking a closer look at the latest Huawei P30 rumors.

Fresh off a bravura showing at MWC 2019 with the foldable Mate X, it’s back to business as usual for Huawei.

The Chinese giant has a fairly reliable annual release cycle at this point. With the Mate 20 series now in the rearview mirror and the Mate X seemingly way beyond the horizon, it’s time for the next P-series phones to take the wheel.

Judging by the leaks and rumors, the Huawei P30 and P30 Pro are expected to once again up the stakes for Huawei’s photography-focused product line.

Here’s everything we know so far about the Huawei P30 and P30 Pro!

Huawei’s P-series once again skipped MWC with the company instead opting to host its own separate reveal event.

Huawei confirmed a March 26 launch in Paris, France just under a week before the start of the Barcelona show. A teaser on Twitter was accompanied by the hashtag #rewritetherules and a video which zoomed in on famous French landmarks.

The P30’s predecessor — the P20 and P20 Pro — hit store shelves in early April after a March reveal, so it seems likely the new phones will follow the same pattern. In a leak we saw from Huawei’s official site, we learned that pre-orders of the devices will get a Sonos One speaker included, and those pre-orders will be valid up to April 7. Therefore, it’s a good bet that the devices will release very shortly after April 7.

It also seems extremely likely the P30 and P30 Pro will never reach U.S. shores. The P series doesn’t usually release in the U.S. regardless, but the mounting legal battles and constant mud slinging won’t help either.

Design

We first caught a glimpse at what the Huawei P30 might look like back in January thanks to leaker @OnLeaks and 91mobiles.

Continuing on from the P20, the first batch of P30 renders depicted a phone with a metallic look, a vertical camera module, and a notched display (albeit this time with a waterdrop-style design).

The biggest changes were the third camera lens, as unlike the P20 Pro, the regular P20 only had two cameras. The missing fingerprint sensor prompted speculation that the Mate 20’s in-display fingerprint sensor would be making its way to the P30. The rear-mounted headphone jack was also notable as the 3.5mm port was absent from the P20 series.

As for the P30 Pro, there were initially rumors that the Pro variant would have a four-lens vertical camera module based on case renders, but that now seems to have been debunked.

More recent leaks from WinFuture‘s Roland Quandt suggest the P30 Pro will instead feature a triple camera with a square-shaped bottom lens. These renders also showed off an IR blaster on the top of the phone, though it appears that the Pro model won’t have a headphone jack. A phone with an identical design was also spotted in the wild.

In a more recent specs blowout, Quandt noted that the P30 Pro’s display will now curve into the rear of the phone, much like Samsung’s Infinity Displays. The Pro also lacks a top earpiece, suggesting it could have a vibration-based loudspeaker system like the LG G8 ThinQ.

As well as blue- and black-tinged gradients, we’ve also now seen a red-orange colorway for the P30 Pro reportedly called “Sunrise,” which looks pretty stunning.

Specs and features

Huawei prides itself on the P series’ photography suite so where better to start than those triple cameras.

Starting with the regular P30, Huawei has reportedly included a 40MP main sensor with f/1.8 aperture, a 16MP wide-angle lens, and an 8MP telephoto lens (f/2.4). The selfie camera on both the P30 and P30 Pro is expected to be a 32MP shooter.

Editor's Pick

The P30’s rumored setup means the 5x hybrid zoom function that was exclusive to the P20 Pro will be making its way to the vanilla P30.

With that in mind, Huawei has apparently pushed the P30 Pro’s zoom capabilities even further to offer a whopping 10x hybrid zoom.

This is achieved through a periscope system similar to what we’ve seen from Oppo. The P30 Pro’s main camera reportedly features a 40MP main shooter (f/1.6), a 20MP wide-angle lens (f/2.2), and an 8MP zoom lens (f/3.4).

However, it seems as though Huawei is calling its Leica-brand setup a “quad camera” based on a Weibo post by Huawei CEO Richard Yu. That fourth lens could well be the tiny Time-of-Flight (ToF) sensor located underneath the flash.

Whatever turns out to be the case, Huawei is clearly going all-in on the P30 Pro’s zoom credentials. It even posted a bunch of shots hyping the zoom potential, but those later turned out to be representative photos based on stock photography. Oops.

Moving on from the camera, the P30 allegedly carries a 6.1-inch OLED display, a 3,650mAh battery, and a Kirin 980 SoC backed by 6GB RAM and 128GB storage. The Pro boosts the display up to 6.47-inches but has the same 2,340 x 1,080 resolution. The battery, RAM, and storage also all jump to 4,200mAh, 8GB, and 128/256/512GB, respectively.

The Pro model is expected to be IP68 rated and feature 40W fast charging like the Mate 20 Pro, although it’s unclear if Huawei’s reverse wireless charging technology will be included. Nano memory is also anticipated to make its less-than-welcome return as the proprietary option for expanding storage.

Both phones could run EMUI 9.1 powered by Android Pie.

Price

Huawei P20 and P20 Pro rear comparison - Huawei P30 and P30 Pro rumors

The P20 launched for 649 euros (~$805) and the P20 Pro cost 899 euros (~$1,115) at launch. With smartphone prices on the rise, it’s likely the P30 and P30 Pro will both be more expensive than their predecessors.

Huawei usually positions the Mate series as its premium flagships, so there’s a good chance the P30 will come in at around or below 799 euros (~$927) to match the regular Mate 20, while the P30 Pro should hopefully retail for lower than the Mate 20 Pro’s 1,049 euros (~$1,217) asking price.

We recently saw a leak from a Norwegian retailer which listed out not only the alleged specs of the P30 series, but also some pricing. The retailer lists the 128GB P30 Pro at 8,990 Norwegian krone (~$1,061), while the 256GB variant is listed at 9990 Norwegian krone (~$1,178). The standard variant costs 6990 Norwegian krone (~$825). These prices line up relatively well with our speculations.

We also saw another leak from Huawei itself, which briefly listed the P30 and P30 Pro bundled with a Sonos speaker and a wireless charging pad. There were also numerous photos of the devices, leaving very little to the imagination. However, the page doesn’t give specific pricing, but it’s a good bet that pre-orders for the devices will get some extra goodies.

That’s all the Huawei P30 and P30 Pro rumors we’ve seen so far! Are you excited to see Huawei’s latest flagship phone? What features would you like to see? Let us know in the comments.
