Big surprise: MIUI 11 is apparently in development by Xiaomi

The back of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro.

We saw MIUI 10 slowly make its way to Xiaomi devices last year, and now the company has reportedly started work on MIUI 11.

According to MyDrivers (via Playful Droid), Xiaomi product planning executive Liu Ming announced the news at the company’s MIUI Core Experience Annual Meeting. News of the update isn’t really a surprise though, as Xiaomi tends to issue a big update each year. So what should we expect from MIUI 11?

The executive apparently claimed the update would be a “new and unique” OS. It’s also expected to feature system optimizations and a “more refreshing feeling.” In other words, the company didn’t announce specific features just yet.

Expectations might be high for the new update though, especially after the meaty update that was 2018’s MIUI 10. Last year’s update delivered a single-camera portrait mode, a redesigned recents menu, nature-inspired notifications, redesigned volume/brightness sliders, and increased responsiveness. Personally, I’m hoping Xiaomi brings night mode photography to more devices via the new version.

Xiaomi also has the nasty habit of updating MIUI while leaving the underlying version of Android intact. Hopefully the company brings Android Pie to these phones as well, as opposed to only delivering the MIUI 11 update.

There’s no word on a release date for the new update, but Xiaomi tends to deliver a new version of MIUI between June and August. What would you like to see in MIUI 11? Let us know in the comments!
