Ubisoft is giving away free copies of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey on PC with Google Project Stream participation. Those who spend an hour with the browser-based streaming service between now and January 15 will get Odyssey added to their Ubisoft UPlay account soon after.
You’ll need to be at least 17-years-old and in the U.S. to qualify (the only location where Project Stream is currently available), and you’ll also need a UPlay account. These accounts are free but some folks find them annoying — especially if they only have one or two games in their library stored there and already have countless other PC game clients to juggle.
Google’s Project Stream, which is currently in beta, is a new venture that aims to deliver 1080p, 60fps video game streaming via Chrome. A number of companies have tried to crack this — like Nvidia with GeForce Now, and Sony with PlayStation Now — to reduce reliance on expensive and quickly outdated gaming hardware, and bring gaming libraries to a wider array of devices.
High hardware costs have long since been a barrier for many would-be PC gamers and streaming is seen by the aforementioned firms as a potential way to bypass those costly restrictions via a subscription model. Unfortunately, unreliable internet and latency issues have stopped this kind of streaming from really taking off.
Still, Project Stream has made good strides so far, and this current offer seems like a great way to get people to give it a go. You only have to commit an hour to the service to get Odyssey, but if you can’t make that, Ubisoft will give you 1,000 of Assassin’s Creed’s Helix credits (worth $10) just for giving it a go.
According to Ubisoft, qualifying user will receive an email “after January 15 with instructions for how to access their free copy” of the same.
You can find out more details on that here and you can sign up for Project Stream here. All you need is Chrome Browser on laptop or desktop.
