- The long-awaited YouTube dark theme is finally here for Android smartphones.
- YouTube dark theme was made available to iPhone users in March of this year but is just coming to Android now.
- Our Google Pixel 2 XL running Android 9 Pie already has the update, so the rollout is happening fast.
Even though Google continuously ignores Android fans’ pleas for a universal dark theme systemwide across the operating system, at least it is finally offering users the next-best-thing: dark themes for individual apps. Finally, we can add a YouTube dark theme to that list.
YouTube dark theme first showed up in an APK teardown at the very beginning of 2018, and then arrived on iOS devices in March of this year. Now, finally, Android users will have the ability to cut down on the bright whites throughout the YouTube app.
Check out these screenshots of YouTube dark theme on a Google Pixel 2 XL running Android 9 Pie:
To be clear, we didn’t see the update immediately when we opened up the app. First, we made sure we were on the latest version of the YouTube Android app, and then we cleared the app’s cache. Once we did that, the dark theme option appeared and we snapped the screenshots above.
Since we got the update so quickly, it’s likely that the rollout is happening at a pretty fast pace (at least by Google’s standards). As such, you should definitely click the button below to make sure you are on the latest version and then clear your cache so you can enable this new dark theme!
