- The quake's epicenter was about 27 kilometers (17 miles) east of the city of Tomakomai, which has a population of about 175,000, and 65 kilometers (40 miles) southeast of Sapporo.
- An aftershock measuring magnitude 5.3 hit the region just minutes after the first quake.
A magnitude 6.7 earthquake hit northern Japan near the major city of Sapporo on Thursday, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reports , triggering dozens of landslides and frantic efforts to save survivors who may be trapped under collapsed buildings.
The death toll has risen to 44 people and 660 people have been injured, the government said on Monday.
