Elliott Broidy, a top Republican fundraiser, paid Rick Gates, the former deputy chairman of President Donald Trump’s campaign, at least $125,000 for advice and insight about his business, appointments for his associates, and the Trump administration’s foreign policy, The New York Times reported Tuesday.
Gates and his longtime mentor, former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, were indicted in October as part of the special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. Mueller is also investigating whether members of the Trump campaign colluded with Moscow to tilt the race in his favor, and whether Trump sought to obstruct justice when he fired FBI director James Comey last year.
