Japanese video game development studio Mistwalker announced that it will shut down Terra Battle 2, the follow-up to 2014’s Terra Battle, in North America this September.
According to Mistwalker’s announcement, you can no longer buy Super Energy or download Terra Battle 2 from the Play Store. You also cannot re-install the game after deletion or play the game if you did not update it to the latest version.
If you have the latest version of Terra Battle 2, you can still play it and use any unused Normal or Super Energy you still have. That will not be the case come September 3, when Mistwalker plans to shut down the game’s servers in North America. The game’s customer support will also go away September 3.
Mistwalker will maintain the Japanese version of the game, though you cannot transfer player data and Energy from the North American version and vice versa.
As for why Mistwalker made this decision, studio founder Hironobu Sakaguchi only said that Terra Battle 2 “was met with unexpected struggles, making it challenging for our team to maintain a sustainable and enjoyable experience.” The studio will continue to develop games, including the upcoming Terra World, though its mobile future is unclear.
Overall, this is a baffling decision from Mistwalker. The studio launched the original Terra Battle in 2014 as a unique take on the strategy role-playing game genre and followed up with Terra Battle 2 last September. There is something to be said about the older title outliving the newer one, though it could be that Terra Battle 2 simply did not meet expectations.
Whatever the reason may be, current Terra Battle 2 players should enjoy the title while they still can.
