Facebook’s new Memories section is a cheap shot of nostalgia

  • Facebook has introduced a new nostalgia-inducing Memories section.
  • It brings together existing features such as On This Day along with some other new additions.
  • You can check out Memories on the Android App or on the Facebook website.

Facebook has launched a new Memories section on its app and website. This section will include the important moments and memories you have shared on Facebook over the years. It will bring together the existing On This Day feature along with special videos to celebrate your friendship, memory recaps, and a section called Memories You May Have Missed.

Facebook has now been around for 14 years meaning there are plenty of memories stored on its servers. According to the blog post accompanying the announcement of Memories, more than 90 million people already use On This Day every day; you can see why Facebook might want to expand the feature.

Getting people to reshare existing posts is also an easy way for Facebook to increase the amount of personal content on the site, something that it has been trying to do more in recent months.

It isn’t revolutionary, but I don’t mind the idea of occasional notifications about memories: they could prod me to get in touch with someone I haven’t spoken to in a while or remind me of a great time from years ago. This could have its downsides, though, if you encounter memories you would rather forget.

If you want to check out your Facebook memories, the new section can be accessed through the mobile app or the Facebook website. You can find Memories in the “more” tab at the bottom right of your mobile app or on Memories page of the Facebook website.
