Tesla sold more than 56,000 China-made electric vehicles in September - the highest since it started production in Shanghai around two years ago, according to data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) on Tuesday.
Most of those were sold in China - of that total, Elon Musk's automaker exported 3,853 vehicles from its Shanghai factory in September, per CPCA data.
The total of 56,006 cars was a 27% jump from August, the CPCA's data showed. The US electric vehicle maker, which is making Model 3 sedans and Model Y sport-utility vehicles in Shanghai, sold 44,264 China-made vehicles in August, including 31,379 that were exported.
Passenger car sales in China in September totalled 1.6 million, down 17% from a year earlier, per CPCA data.
Tesla said it delivered a record 241,300 vehicles globally between July and September - up 73% from last year.
Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory now makes more cars than its Fremont factory in California, Musk said during the company's annual shareholders' meeting on Thursday.
Musk said in the meeting that the Shanghai factory was "the best quality, lowest cost and also low drama."
Tesla's China sales fell by 27% in April from March after the automaker became a target for the Chinese government and state media.
